Captain Marvel v11 #1

Creative Team: Alyssa Wong (W) Jan Bazaldua (A)

Synopsis: HIGHEST, FURTHEST, FASTEST!

The Captain gets a permanent glow-up designed by superstar

artist Jen Bartel! And that's not all that's changed. Brand-new

look - brand-new creative team - and a brand-new status quo.

Carol Danvers is one of the powerhouses of the Marvel Universe,

a woman capable of harnessing the energy of the sun. So if you're

coming for Earth? She's the first one you take off the board.

Someone's figured just how to do just that. Introducing a new

supporting cast and villains both beloved and dangerously fresh,

Alyssa Wong and Jan Bazaldua's exhilarating series kicks off here!

Score: 9.2 (Near Mint Minus--Goddamn 11 volumes of this title!

I think 7 of them belong to Carol. Anyhoot, goodish art & decent

story so far. Ton of variants and none of them are promoting the upcoming The Marvels film which is weird. First appearance of Yuna Yang [who is probably Alyssa Wong] & the villainess Omen. Why does Genis-Vell always get fucked up?

Alan Scott: Green Lantern #1

Creative Team: Tim Sheridan (W) Cian Tormey (A)

Synopsis: A POWERFUL TALE OF ALAN SCOTT'S EARLY

DAYS AS GREEN LANTERN!

Alan Scott's early days as the Green Lantern are seen in a new

light! The Green Lantern is the most powerful member of the

JSA, beloved by all of America, but his personal life is a well-kept

secret. This is a story about love, about fear, and most of all about

the courage to stand up to that fear. Alan Scott's past is the key to

his future when the Red Lantern appears, ready to strike down the

mighty Green Lantern!

Score: 6.0 (Fine--The art was decent and the coloring was good.

Overall it's another new-age queer story where being gay and

knowing the character is gay is the most important part of the story.

Being a superhero is the last thing to be relevant. This is one of the better new-age queer stories but not by much. I still find it interesting that Alan Scott is gay now because, in his post-crisis era, he was pretty much a homophobe. He didn't approve of his son's husband but now you could write it off as him being jealous that he couldn't be with his one true love.

Score: 5.0 (Very Good/Fine--Literally was kidnapped and hooked to a machine that links his mind to an Iron Giant Robot that looks like him. Confused, he's now fighting horribly against a giant monster).

After the shocking events in Wonder Woman, the Amazons are now

fighting for a world that no longer wants them! Led by their fearless

of life are threatened. Will the tribes survive their new reputation?

Score: 4.5 (Very Good Plus--Amazons Attack pick up after Wonder Woman #2 [we reviewed #1 last month]. Art was average. The story is moving at a fast pace to the point you don't even know what's going on outside of the mysterious person who brought in a toxic box with mind control gas leaking out but it's spreading throughout the building as fast as the story is moving.)

Synopsis: SERIES PREMIERE

An eons-long series of multiverse wars between demons and

witches has found Earth as its latest and final battleground.

The battle pits NECRONEMA, the ever-expanding demonic

EDENWOOD, the witchcraft-controlled land that acts as a

barrier against the war zone and the rest of the U.S.RION, a

young DEMON HUNTER, is thrust into the role of hero and

leader after defeating a magical demon called a GATHER, a

transient demon with the power to cross any barrier or dimension.

Summoned by the WITCH WAR COUNCIL, Rion must assemble

an elite team of DEMON HUNTERS tasked with annihilating a list

of targets within the demon-controlled lands. The men and women he selects happen to be the most famous and revered demon hunters of all time, dating back to the 1700s.

Score: 9.2 (Near Mint Minus--Great art! Tony Daniel is one of my top 10 favorite modern comic book artists but his storytelling falls a little short on minor plot details [which could be done on purpose]. But this is the first(?) comic he wrote so I'm willing to let him cook and see where it goes. There's a cool map that displays where Edenwood is located.)
