Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a 2023 superhero film sequel to Aquaman (2018), and the 15th film and final installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) based on the DC character Aquaman. Momoa pitched a story for an Aquaman sequel during the production of the first film. Wan did not want to rush a sequel but agreed to oversee development. In the film, Arthur must work with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to prevent Black Manta (Yahya Abul-Mateen II) from killing his family and using the cursed Black Trident to overheat the world while searching for the lost seventh kingdom of the seas.

Movie Review:

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Review: Straight up I have no problem with this film. It's not a blockbuster hit (which I think people expect every superhero movie to be a blockbuster hit). It's just a simple story that becomes a catastrophic situation. Many times Black Panther came to mind with Atlantis being invaded also I could see T'Challa breaking Killmonger out of prison to get his help. The interaction between Arthur & Orm was great. It was a nice adventure and exploration between the different kingdoms, the mysterious mutated giant-sized jungle, and the lost kingdom. I like how the story/mission was for Aquaman & Ocean Master to work together to stop Black Manta from using the he stolen but they learn the situation is much worse that he's possessed by Kordax within the Black Trident and is about to be free from his eternal prison. Things get intense when Black Manta steals Arthur Jr. to use his blood to free Kordax.

The movie is a lot of fun, simple, beautiful (Atlantis & the Jungle), and action-packed. Like the first film the sequel wasn't based on or following a particular storyline from the comics which is what I like most about this film is its originality. It tries to be funny with humor a little kid would enjoy such as Arthur tricks Orm into eating a cockroach (to his and our surprise he finds them delicious). Get a lil Lobo tease with Momoa playing around on a motorcycle (get your Lobo specs ready folks). For all you Amber Heard haters you be happy you don't see her much at all but you will be disappointed by her not being killed in battle. I honestly thought Aquaman's mom would've been killed during the invasion which would help convince Orm to help Aquaman stop Black Manta but that didn't happen. Lastly, I'm disappointed Black Manta didn't kill Arthur Jr. (original cut he was killed but test screeners didn't like that regardless it happened in the comics) or cut Aquaman's handoff (plus he had the chance to). Special effects were off a few times but that kinda stuff doesn't bother me. Even though this was the final DCEU film this movie is so self-contained it literally could be a part of James Gunn's DCU. I do wonder

what were the Batman scenes that were removed from the script. All and all a great movie! I'm going to go watch it again on Christmas day. Thanks again Screen X for letting us watch it in your awesome theater.

Score: 9.4 (Near Mint)
